Description
This study examines the international religious cooperation movements of the Bahá’í Faith and Won-Buddhism, highlighting their characteristics, challenges, and future prospects. The Bahá’í Faith was formally introduced to the international community at the 1893 World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago. Since then, it has developed institutional cooperation with international organizations through the Bahá’í International Community (BIC), which holds consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Won-Buddhism began its international engagement in 1958 with Sungsan Park Gil-jin’s participation in the World Fellowship of Buddhists, and in 1973, Great Master Daesan declared the establishment of a United Religions (UR) organization equivalent to the UN, laying the foundation for independent international religious cooperation. Al though the two religions adopt different approaches—Bahá’í Faith focusing on in stitutional collaboration centered on the UN, and Won-Buddhism emphasizing interreligious solidarity through the ideology of religious unity—they both contribute to resolving global social issues such as peace, human rights, environment, education, women, and youth. This study reveals that despite their differing doctrines and belief systems, both religions share a common goal: the essential oneness of humanity and the realization of collective peace. It analyzes the distinctive features of their international cooperation efforts and explores future directions for more advanced collaboration. Key shared challenges include deepening cooperation with the UN system, harmonizing religious diversity with universal values, expanding grassroots community-based initiatives, and developing new models of cooperation suited to the digital age.
